Your whole month at a glance

Budget Tracker shows your month at a glance: income, expenses, what is left over and your savings rate. Plan each month of the year, add each payment as it happens and pick its category: the budget, the dashboard, the year overview and the charts update by themselves. No formulas to write or extra budgeting app to learn.

How it works

  1. Set it upOn Settings, pick your currency and a color set. On Categories, change the category names if you want.
  2. Plan your yearOn Plans, type the year, then what you plan to earn and spend in each category, month by month.
  3. Track every paymentOn Transactions, add each payment in or out and pick its category. Income or expense is set by the category. A red word means that payment is not counted until you fix its date, category or amount.
  4. See your monthOn Monthly Budget, pick a month: planned vs actual, what is left and progress bars. The Dashboard and Year Overview update by themselves.

What's inside

Dashboard

4 big numbers (income, expenses, left over, savings rate), a "where your money went" chart and planned vs actual bars for each expense category.

Plans & Monthly Budget

12 monthly plans for one year on Plans. On Monthly Budget, pick a month: planned and actual amounts for 3 income and 14 expense categories, what is left and progress bars.

Transactions

Room for 1,000 payments, a category list and colored categories.

Year Overview

All 12 months in one table (planned and actual income and expenses, net) with an income vs expenses chart.

Savings Goals

Up to 13 goals: type the target and what you have saved, see what is left and a progress bar. You update the saved amounts yourself; they are not linked to Transactions.

Categories & Settings

Your own category names, currency, color set and your own words.

Questions

Do I need Microsoft Excel?

No. Google Sheets is free with a Google account; on a phone, use the free Google Sheets app. If you prefer Excel, the Excel files are included too: a blank file and an example.

How do I get my copy in Google Sheets?

Open the PDF you download and tap a button: a blank copy or an example. Then tap "Use template". A copy is saved in your own Google Drive.

Which currencies can I use?

Any. Pick one from the list or type your own currency sign. The amounts stay as you type them: there is no exchange-rate conversion.

Can I change the categories?

Yes. Change the names on Categories before you add your own payments. Use each name once (up to 30 characters): a name used twice turns red.

How do I start a new month?

Pick the month on Monthly Budget. Each month has its own plan on Plans, and your past payments stay in the list and show on Year Overview. To repeat a month, copy its planned amounts and paste them into the next month with Paste values only, then change what differs.

What happens in a new year?

The plans are for one year. Type the new year on Plans: the 12 plans stay and belong to the new year. To keep the old plans, start a new copy.

How do I type a refund?

Type the amount with a minus, for example -25.50.

What is the savings rate?

Money you move to the Savings category plus what is left over, as a share of your income. It shows what you can keep this month, not money already in a savings account. The Savings category always counts toward it, even if you rename it.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. Open your copy in the Google Sheets or Excel phone app. Every tab shows what you type and read first: on Transactions the date, category and amount fit the screen, and Monthly Budget and Plans are one column. The bars and charts sit to the right and are easiest to see on a computer.
